What is a Designated Learning Institution?

International students can study in Canada through a Designated Learning Institution or a DLI. A Designated Learning Institution (DLI) is, therefore, a school that admits international students.

Without a Designated Learning Institution, international students may not be able to study in Canada. An acceptance letter from a Designated Learning Institution would have to be presented by an International student before he or she can obtain a study permit with enables him to study or work as a student in Canada.

It is important you know that all primary and secondary schools in Canada are all Designated Learning Institutions (DLIs) whereas not all post-secondary schools are DLI. If you must pursue a bachelor’s or master’s or doctorate’s degree program in Canada as an international student, you must be accepted by a Designated Learning Institution.
